Waspito, a Cameroonian health-focused social network, has secured a $2.5 million seed extension from DP World through Newtown Partners, Saviu Ventures, AAIC Investment, Axian Ventures, and CFAO’s Health54. This funding will aid the startup in its growth in the Francophone region.
Waspito: A Health-Focused Social Network
Waspito is a health-focused social network that enables users (patients) to access and consult with verified doctors over video calls. The platform also facilitates sample collection from homes and the delivery of medication. By introducing this hybrid model, Waspito aims to make healthcare more accessible to users in underserved areas.
Piloting a Hybrid Model in Ivory Coast
At the start of the year, Waspito branched out into Ivory Coast, where it is piloting a hybrid model. This involves setting up mini-clinics within the branch network of La Poste Corporation, the national postal service in Ivory Coast. These clinics will enable patients to connect with doctors virtually and access other healthcare services provided by partners.
Growing Presence in Africa
Waspito has its eyes on Senegal and Gabon, backed by a new round after last year’s $2.7 million seed. The startup claims to have reached 650,000 users in Cameroon and Ivory Coast, with 950 doctors onboarded and 60,000 consultations facilitated.
Addressing the Digital Divide
A majority of users in Africa remain offline due to the cost of internet and smartphones, despite the expansion of Africa’s digital economy. Waspito acknowledges this challenge and is introducing a hybrid approach in Cameroon and Senegal at the end of the first quarter next year.
Jean Lobe: Founder of Waspito
Jean Lobe founded Waspito at the start of 2020, just before the COVID pandemic became a global health emergency. In an interview with TechCrunch, Lobe explained that Waspito sought to approach telemedicine differently by enabling instant video consultations.
Instant Video Consultations
Lobe said: "Going online to book an appointment for later doesn’t really ring a bell when somebody is really seriously sick or someone that needs a doctor right away. This is why we do instant video consultations." When a user logs in, they can select a doctor from a list of those currently online.
Partnerships and Support
Waspito has integrated with local hospitals for support with patients requiring deeper reviews and/or admission. Lobe explained: "We have partnered with hospitals in a way that after consultation on Waspito, care continues in the nearest hospital without the need for additional consultation payments or registration."
Making Healthcare Accessible
Lobe is convinced that constantly having doctors online is one of the ways to make healthcare more accessible. He said: "By providing instant access to verified doctors and healthcare services, we can bridge the gap between patients and medical professionals in underserved areas."
Addressing the Digital Divide
The digital divide remains a significant challenge in Africa, with many users unable to afford internet and smartphones. Waspito acknowledges this issue and is working towards addressing it through its hybrid model.
Conclusion
Waspito’s $2.5 million seed extension will aid the startup in its growth in the Francophone region. By introducing a hybrid model, Waspito aims to make healthcare more accessible to users in underserved areas. The startup’s commitment to addressing the digital divide is commendable, and it will be interesting to see how Waspito continues to evolve in the coming months.
